2026 ESSAY TOPIC

“Forty years after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986,
is the continued use of nuclear power still a worthy option for producing energy?”

GENERAL INFORMATION ON CCCAF SCHOLARSHIP

  1. The purpose of the CCCAF Scholarship is to assist dependent children of CPOA/CGEA members in defraying expenses incurred at a university, college or vocational school of acceptance.
  2. Please complete all information on the application.  Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  3. Eligibility requirements:
    1. Be a dependent child of a member or deceased member of the USCG CPOA/CGEA.
      1. Have not attained the age of 24 by 1 April of the award year. 
      2. No age limit exists for children with disabilities.
    2. Enrollment or acceptance with an accredited college, university, or vocational school
      1. Submit proof or enrollment or letter of acceptance with your application.
  4. Submitted essays MUST meet the following criteria:
    1. Must state the essay topic on the top of the submission. 
    2. Shall not exceed 500 words.
    3. Plagiarism/use of AI tools: CPOA has the right to run all entries through plagiarism software and disqualify those entries we determine were not the sole product of the applicant. 
    4. Will be judged on:
      1. Developing your Point of View
      2. Critical Thinking,
      3. Organization,
      4. Progression,
      5. Examples,
      6. Spelling,
      7. Vocabulary 
      8. and Sentence Structure.
  5. Five grants in the amounts listed below, will be awarded to the individuals submitting the top entries: 
  • 1st Place $5000.00
  • 2nd Place $4000.00
  • 3rd Place $3000.00 
  • 4th Place $1500.00 
  • 5th Place $1500.00
  1. Applications and required material must be received no later than 1 April 2026.

The USCG CPOA reserves the right to choose the recipients of the scholarships as it deems fit.  A committee of judges shall be appointed, and their decision is final. By entering this contest, winning applicants agree to have their essays printed in full or in part in “The Chief” Magazine and on our web site. Winners may be asked to provide a photograph suitable for publication.
